A long weekend in the San Juans with a small group and one summit on the list: Mount Sneffels, 14,158 ft. Class 2+ scrambling, early alarms, no ropes — and a range that stays quieter than the rest of Colorado. Hot springs at the end.

A long weekend in southwest Colorado, based in Ouray — a small mountain town wedged into the San Juans, far from the Front Range crowds. The objective is Mount Sneffels, 14,158 ft, via the standard southwest ridge. Class 2+: loose rock, an early alarm, a strict turnaround time, no ropes.
Sneffels is the rare 14er that earns its reputation without asking for technical skills — and the San Juans are quieter, sharper, and stranger than the ranges most people climb in Colorado.
Land in Montrose. Drive up to Ouray. A short hike in the afternoon to start adjusting to the altitude. Gear check, weather briefing, dinner in town.
4:30 AM start. 3,000+ ft of gain. A lot of weather watching. If everything cooperates, you’re standing on top of Sneffels before the afternoon storms move in. Hard turnaround at 11 AM, no exceptions.
Two options depending on what the group has left: the Ouray via ferrata for people who want exposure, or the Blue Lakes trail for people who don’t. Everyone ends in the hot springs.
Breakfast in Ouray. Drive back to Montrose.
Four days with eight other people who decided this was a good idea, doing something properly hard in a place that doesn’t show up in most people’s Colorado photos.
