An hour with a family of mountain gorillas. A dawn walk to find wild chimps in the rainforest. Then a safari for lions, elephants and rhinos. All in one small country, in one loop.
Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills. It rebuilt itself after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, so we also spend time in Kigali: the Genocide Memorial, the art museum and the galleries of young Rwandan artists.

June starts the long dry season. Forest trails are less muddy, and in Akagera the animals gather near the water, so they're easier to find.
Mountain gorillas are the only great apes whose numbers are going up. Small teams, one gorilla family each, one hour with them. This is where Dian Fossey studied them.
Nyungwe is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. We cross a canopy bridge 70 m above the forest floor, then go looking for chimps at dawn.
Akagera lost its lions after the war. They came back in 2015, and rhinos in 2017. Now it has all of the Big Five again, plus a boat safari with hippos and crocodiles.
