The Fishermen's Trail follows Portugal's wild southwest coast: cliff paths, empty beaches and small fishing villages. Nobody built it. Fishermen walked these paths for generations to reach the rocks where they fish.
We walk about 107 km in six days with a day pack only. A van moves your bag to the next village every day, and two local guides walk with us. Halfway there's a day off in Milfontes: canoe on the river, then a bodyboard lesson.

Spring on the coast: wildflowers on the cliffs, storks on their nests and mild days for walking. The summer crowds and the heat aren't there yet.
White storks usually nest on rooftops and church towers. Here they build their nests on rocks above the ocean, one of the only places in the world where they do it.
A different village every night and a fish dinner. Try percebes once: goose barnacles that locals pick off the rocks at low tide.
Two nights in one place, nothing to repack. Canoe the Mira river in the morning, bodyboard lesson in the afternoon. Later, wine tasting in Porto Covo.
