Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, 5,895 m, and you don't need to be a climber to stand on top. No ropes, no ice axes. Just good legs and some training.
We take the 7-day Lemosho route: quiet, beautiful and the best for the altitude. Then boots off and two days of safari: elephants in Tarangire and a day in the Ngorongoro Crater.

June is the start of the dry season: clearer skies on summit night and drier trails. On safari the grass gets shorter, so animals are easier to spot.
Kilimanjaro isn't part of a range. It rises alone from the plains. Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller first reached the top in 1889, with local guide Yohani Lauwo.
We start in rainforest with colobus monkeys, cross the moorland and the Shira Plateau, scramble up the Barranco Wall, and reach the ice at the top.
Tarangire has huge elephant herds and old baobab trees. Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano full of animals: zebras, wildebeest, flamingos and, with luck, lions and black rhinos.
