We sleep in a hut at 3,613 m, right under Mont Blanc. At first light we climb the Chéré Couloir, 350 m of ice, before the first cable car brings up the crowds.
Then we put skis on and ride the Vallée Blanche home: 20 km and 2,800 m down a glacier, back into town. Three IFMGA guides, six spots. You need to ski off-piste with confidence. You don't need to have climbed ice before.

Long days, cold nights and good ice in the couloir. The Vallée Blanche still has deep snow. Monday is a booked reserve day in case the weather says no.

The hut sits on the glacier under the Aiguille du Midi. We sleep 20 minutes from the climb, so we're on the ice before anyone else gets there.

Five or six pitches of ice, up to 85° at the steepest bit. Two guests per guide, fixed anchors, and we rappel back down the same line.

One of the great ski runs in the Alps. It starts at the top of the Aiguille du Midi cable car, which was the highest in the world when it opened in 1955.

A rough plan. The guides make the final call on the weather.
Transfer from Geneva. Gear fitting, route briefing with the guides, welcome dinner.
Morning ski with the guides. Then the cable car up and a short walk across the glacier to the hut. Ice practice before dinner.
Breakfast at 4:30. Climb the couloir at first light, then ski the Vallée Blanche back to town. Celebration dinner.
If the weather stopped us on Sunday, we try again today. If not: slow morning, spa, transfer to Geneva.
